The Next Step: Operational Modeling

Papers & Presentations

Description

Advances in environmental modeling developed in the research and development community should be transitioned to operational agencies in order to provide the user community with state-of-the-art information, products and services in a routine and timely manner. This workshop will review existing and planned operational models to be implemented in the Chesapeake Bay and its watershed, and is inclusive of meteorological, watershed, estuarine and coastal ocean models that may include a variety of physical, biogeochemical and ecosystem models.

In addition to providing a background of the operational models employed and data available from the various operational agencies and IOOS, this session will present information on the transition process, including:

  • The importance of research-to-operations making connections at a very early stage in the development process; and
  • The establishment of standards in such things as frameworks, methodologies, techniques, formats, grids, test beds and skill assessments that will guarantee interoperability.

The session may also include discussions on:

  • Model coupling (e.g. basin-coastal-estuarine-riverine; hydrodynamic-wave; physical-biogeochemical); and
  • The determination of model, or forecast, uncertainty through such techniques as ensemble (probabilistic) modeling.
